I didn’t want to write this.
I wanted to be in my workshop, calibrating the torque on my desktop robotic arm’s third joint. But last week, I had to sit in a coffee shop in Herning, staring at three unopened emails from Danish accounting firms — all asking for “more details” before giving a quote for a financial audit.
I’m 23. From Jiangsu. Studied mining engineering in Dalian. Now I sell small robotic arms to hobbyists and small manufacturers in Germany and Sweden. My monthly revenue? Between $10k and $50k. Not rich. Not poor. But stuck.
Inventory’s piling up.
I need to file my annual financial statement.
I need an audit.
And I need a quote.
That’s it.
But in Herning, asking for a quote feels like knocking on a door with no handle.
The Silence Between “Hello” and “Price”
I started with Google. Typed: “financial audit quote Herning Denmark.”
Top results? Firms with fancy websites. Clean logos. “We support international SMEs.”
I emailed five. Three didn’t reply.
Two replied with:
“Thank you for your inquiry. To provide an accurate quote, we require your financial statements, chart of accounts, and a brief overview of your business structure.”
I sent them everything — in English.
One week later:
“We’re reviewing your documents. We’ll get back to you soon.”
“Soon.”
I’ve been in Denmark for 14 months.
I’ve learned that “soon” in Danish business culture often means “when we feel like it.”
I didn’t know this at first.
I thought if I was clear, polite, and organized — which I am — they’d respond like my suppliers in Shenzhen. “Got it. Quote ready in 24h.”
But here?
It’s not about clarity.
It’s about context.
And context?
It’s invisible.
I realized later — I didn’t know what they needed to not need.
I didn’t know if my company structure (a Danish ApS) needed a specific auditor registration.
I didn’t know if my revenue level triggered mandatory audit rules under the Danish Financial Statements Act (Årsregnskabsloven).
I didn’t know if they’d charge more because I’m foreign.
I was guessing.
And guessing costs time.
And time?
That’s the real currency here.
The Framework I Built (After Failing)
I stopped chasing quotes.
I started asking:
“What’s the path?”
Not “how much?”
But “what do I need to do first?”
I called the Danish Business Authority (Erhvervsstyrelsen) — not by email. By phone.
I used Google Translate. I sounded awkward.
They confirmed:
- If your ApS has more than 2 employees and revenue over DKK 10 million (~€1.3M), audit is mandatory.
- If not? It’s optional. But banks and EU buyers often require it anyway.
I’m below the threshold.
But my German buyer asked for one.
So I needed it.
Then I found a small firm in Herning — not on Google, but on a Facebook group for Chinese entrepreneurs in Denmark. Someone wrote:
“Used KPMG? Too expensive. Used a solo accountant. Took 6 weeks. But he gave me a quote in 48h.”
I messaged him.
He replied in 3 hours.
“Send me your last 3 months of bank statements, your VAT return, and your invoice log. I’ll give you a quote by tomorrow.”
I sent it.
He replied:
“DKK 8,500. Fixed. No hidden fees. 3 weeks turnaround.”
That’s it.
No forms. No “review.” No “we’ll get back to you.”
I paid.
He started.
What I Learned (The Quiet Truths)
Information asymmetry is the real tax.
I spent 3 weeks trying to find the right person. The right person didn’t have a website. He had a Facebook profile and a phone number.
I didn’t know that until I asked in a group I didn’t trust.Time is the cost no one talks about.
I could’ve paid DKK 25,000 to a big firm.
But I’d have waited 6 weeks.
And I’d have still been unsure if I got a fair price.
I chose the small guy because he gave me speed, not prestige.I’m not good at asking for help.
I’m the guy who’d rather fix a broken motor than say, “I don’t know how.”
But here?
Silence isn’t professionalism.
Silence is isolation.
I still feel guilty for bothering people.
But I’m learning:
In Denmark, the quiet ones are the ones who know.
You just have to find them.
✅ Actionable Steps (Not Promises)
If you’re in Herning or nearby, and you need a financial audit quote:
Check your obligation
→ Visit Erhvervsstyrelsen → Search “årsregnskab” → Use the “Er du forpligtet til at lave årsregnskab?” tool.
Key point: If your ApS has >2 employees AND revenue >DKK 10M, audit is mandatory. Below? Optional — but often required by clients.Find the small firms, not the big names
→ Search Facebook: “Chinese entrepreneurs in Denmark”
→ Look for posts like “Who did your audit?”
→ DM them. Ask: “Did you use someone local? Can you share the name?”
Key point: Big firms charge for branding. Small ones charge for work. The difference is weeks.Prepare these 3 things before asking for a quote
- Last 3 months of bank statements (PDF)
- Your latest VAT return (Momsafregning)
- A simple Excel list of your top 10 invoices (date, amount, customer)
Key point: Don’t send 100 pages. Send 3 clean files. It saves everyone time.
Ask for a fixed price, not hourly
→ Say: “Can you give me a fixed quote for the full audit, including filing?”
→ If they say “it depends,” walk away.
Key point: A good small auditor will know what your business looks like. They won’t need to guess.
Final Thought
I used to think the problem was language.
Then I thought it was bureaucracy.
Now I think it’s expectation.
I expected answers to come fast.
I expected quotes to be transparent.
I expected people to reply.
But here?
The system doesn’t move because you ask.
It moves because you find the right person — quietly — and you give them what they need, without drama.
I’m still nervous.
Still overthinking.
Still scared I’ll miss something.
But I got my quote.
And I didn’t pay for a fancy office.
I paid for a person who answered.
That’s worth more than any certification.
